The Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife on Thursday had announced the appointment of a Professor of Agricultural Economics from the university’s Faculty of Agriculture, Adebayo Bamire, as the new Vice-Chancellor.
However, the announcement of the new V.C however, didn't go down well with the INDIGENES of Ife because he is an Ekiti man and with the claims that none of Ife indigene has been appointed as a Vice Chancellor in the school.
It was gathered that on Thursday, March 17th, the indigenes of Ife gathered at the school gate and started protesting. The school's security men were said to have been beaten and forced to lock the school gate.
The indigenes today Monday 21st March resumed protest at the gate of the University disrupting the free flow of movement in and out of the campus.
The group of protesters was heard saying, “we are not thieves, we are not causing violence, we are asking for our rights.”
“We are asking the management of Obafemi Awolowo University to allow an Ife Indigene to head this campus.
The protesters were asking people to go back home, including the students of the university, adding that the Ife indigenes were being enslaved on the campus and it was time for them to rule.
The gates leading to the school have been shut down indefinitely.
