Godfery Okoye University sets PHD as minimum requirement for teaching

The Vice-Chancellor, Reverend Father Professor Christian Anieke, has announced that from the 2025-2026 academic session, a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree will be the minimum qualification required for teaching at Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu.

This directive aligns with the National Universities Commission guidelines and was shared during a spiritual retreat for academic and senior administrative staff.

Lecturers with lower degrees have been urged to upgrade their qualifications, as graduate assistants will no longer teach classes independently. The Vice-Chancellor emphasized the importance of mentorship, warning against abuse of the program and urging officials to ensure students make a meaningful impact in society.

He also stated that missing lectures will be considered a serious offense, with penalties for defaulters.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Sister Professor MarySylvia Nwachukwu, expressed concerns about lecture attendance during the first week of resumption and pledged to intensify supervision to ensure teaching standards are met.

The retreat included a spiritual reflection by Reverend Father Doctor Liberatus Isife, who reminded staff that the growth of any institution relies on periodic evaluation and the commitment to positive change. He identified obstacles such as failure to develop oneself, outdated lecture materials, and boundary violations, stressing the need for sacrifices to accelerate the university’s progress.

The retreat was attended by principal officers, professors, heads of departments, directors, and other senior officials, alongside a similar session for students at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Convocation Arena.
