Good News: SSANU Suspends Planned Strike

The University of Ibadan chapter of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) on Monday said it had suspended the proposed indefinite strike scheduled to begin on April 22.

Mr Wale Akinremi, Chairman of the association, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan on Monday that the suspension was due to an agreement reached at an interactive session on April 19.

According to him, the interactive session was held between the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Mr Emeka Wogu, and Presidents of Joint Action Committee (JAC).

JAC comprises SSANU, the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) and the National Association of Academic Technologies (NAAT).

The association had, on April 19, threatened to begin an indefinite strike over the non-payment of the Earned Allowances of the non-teaching staff in the universities.

This payment was based on the agreement between the Federal Government and SSANU in 2009.

"The Presidents of JAC had an interactive session with the Minister of Labour and it was agreed that a meeting between the FGN and Non-Teaching Staff Unions of Nigerian Universities will take place on Friday, April 26.

"JAC also fixed same day to address a press conference after crucial decision on contending issues must have been taken based on the outcome of the meeting with government," he said.

Akinremi added that the minister had hinted that the government was working and would be ready with something positive by Friday.

He said that the association had directed its members to remain calm pending the outcome of Friday's meeting and subsequent directive of JAC through the press conference. NAN
