Ibrahim Umar has been appointed the new Vice Chancellor of Gombe State University, GSU by the governor of Gombe State, Ibrahim Dankwambo.
This was made known in a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the university, Abubakar Sammani, in Gombe on Friday.
The statement quoted Mr. Sammani as saying the appointment letter was signed by the Secretary to Gombe State Government, Abubakar Bage.
Until his appointment, Mr. Umar was the Dean, Faculty of Science and Postgraduate School of the university.
Born on June 12, 1958 in Dukul village of Kwami Local Government Area of the state, Umar obtained a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria in 1981.
He started work as a Graduate Assistant at the ABU in 1982, had a Ph. D from University of Salford, England, on Nuclear and Radiochemistry in 1987.
He was the Director, Centre for Energy Research and Training, ABU Zaria; Director, Nuclear Science and Technology, Energy Commission of Nigeria, Abuja and one time Deputy Vice Chancellor of the state university.
A recipient of the National Honours of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), Mr. Umar is a Fellow of the Chemical Society of Nigeria, Fellow of Materials Society of Nigeria.
Mr. Umar succeeds Abdullahi Mahdi, who has been the Vice Chancellor of the university since its inception in 2005.
