ombe State University Chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU on Wednesday embarked on one day warning strike in solidarity with their counter-parts in Rivers State University of Science and Technology, (RSUST).
According to the Chairman, Dr. Umar Adamu, the call to stay off duty was made by the national body of the union to all universities across the country to show concern to the plight of their RSUST members who have been protesting the re-appointment of the University's Vice Chancellor by Governor Chibuike Ameachi as against the law of the National University Commission (NUC) and that of the institution.
He said that the laws provided that a Vice Chancellor is entitled to a single term of five years only and shall be eligible for re-appointment after spending four years outside the office.
Meanwhile, a similar situation is brewing in Gombe State University where the Vice Chancellor, Professor Abdulahi Mahdi is said to have over stayed.
Professor Mahdi was appointed VC at the inception of the University in 2004 by the erstwhile governor of the state, Senator Muhammad Danjuma Goje.
According to the laws establishing the university, Madhi's Five-year term expired in 2009 but he said he was re-appointed.
But it was gathered that the university's Governing Council in its investigations found VC's claim to untrue.
Some students of the University recently protested against the removal of the VC.
It was learnt that the University awaits the decision of the Governor of the state; Alhaji Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo on the matter which sources said has been tabled before him in a report filed by the Governing Council.
