Ghana's 61st Independence anniversary was held on Tuesday, March 6, 2018. The anniversary was graced with presentation of awards to people that has contributed to the economy. It didn't come to a close without recognizing a Ghanaian teacher with Warvi D/A primary school, Mr. Awudu Kombian who walks 42 kilometres each day to school. The authorities of Tolon District Assembly in Ghana rewarded him with a standing fan for his steadfastness.
The award was presented by the district director of education Reverend Georgina Anaaba Norga who encouraged the teacher to continue with the good work.
Mr. Kombian reportedly walks 42 kilometres on the road down to school every day to prepare the pupils for lessons, it was also said that, he has been serving as the only teacher and headmaster at the school for several academic periods and there were times the school activities had to be on standstill when he fell ill or is out of town.
Receiving the award at the event, Mr. Kombian expressed his gratitude and thanked the authorities for the recognition of his works. he said; “The award itself…the prize itself is not something that I will place much emphasis on but the gesture. The gesture of recognizing what I have done is what gladdens my heart”
“But we also expect that as we are trying, you will have to do whatever to be able to support us to be able to do the work well. So, I will say I’m happy that recognition has been given for the effort that I’ve been putting, so it’s quite refreshing to know that someone is looking at you and what you are doing; that alone is satisfying,”
“It’s very challenging but as a professional you have to always do your best to see what you can do in the midst of the challenges. Every day I have to travel about 42kms to go and teach, because it’s a very deprived community, and places like that you don’t have accommodation so even if you are willing to even stay there, there is no accommodation for you”, he said.
Other teachers were rewarded as well, for their contributions in helping to promote rural education in the area.
