GAPOSA clarifies alleged death of a student at the school's health centre

The attention of the Management of the Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade, Ogun State has been drawn to news making the round on social media about our student, Okubena Hannah who was said to have died at our health center domiciled on our campus.

While it is not our nature to respond to unfounded allegations, however putting into consideration the enormity of the allegations, it has become necessary to set the record straight and also inform members of the public on the tragic Occurrence.

The said student, Okubena, an HND Accounting student was billed to write an exam on the 20th of October. Just as she was about to go in for the exam, her health worsened and she was directed by her lecturer to visit the clinic and that should her case worsened, she would be given an opportunity for a makeup exams; as this was the case for students who have toed this part.

Following the advice of the lecturer and health advisory from the clinic, in the company of her parents, she was referred to the Olabisi Onabanjo Teaching Hospital, Sagamu for better health care services.

It is worthy of note to say that on the said date, a directive by the State Government that schools in the state be closed temporarily due to the #Endsars protest that had taken a nationwide dimension. The directive was adhered strictly to by the school management.

Unfortunately, the said student passed on after a brief illness at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu on Sunday, 25th, October, 2020 having been referred by our medical practitioners on Campus.

While commiserating with the family, relatives and loved ones, suffice to say that she did not die on campus in some of the sensational news making the rounds on social media that she passed on today (Monday) within the school premises. it is heartbreaking that faceless individuals have decided to politicize the sad occurrence by using the life of an innocent individual to score needless points.

As a responsible institution of learning, we hold in high esteem the well being of our students as we will not in anyway jeopardise the need for proper care for anyone in dire need for such.

We thereby call on members of the public as well as our students, to stay calm as Management is working assiduously towards the improved well being of all.
