Federal University of Technology Akure, Ondo State on saturday, 3rd February, lost Tunji Agboola, a 500 level Applied Geophysics student during a football match.
The circumstances that surrounds his death was associated to lack of functioning health care centre in the school as at when the incident took place. It was gathered that when he slumped, he was quickly taken to the sick bay, but unfortunately, it was on lockdown due to the ongoing strike by Non-Academic Staff union. He was then rushed to a private hospital outside the school, but was not attended to due to lack of oxygen needed to resuscitate him at that point.
He was finally taken to the State Specialist Hospital, Akure, where he was confirmed dead. This aroused so much anger amongst the students which almost resulted in a protect by the Nigerian Association of Earth and Mineral Science Students (NAEMSS), if not for the intervention of the SUG president.
It was concluded that the NAEMSS will have a meeting with the management of the school to pour out their grievances as well as to ensure something of this act doesn't resurface in the future.
According to the SUG president, the remains of the deceased has been handed over to the family, Meanwhile, the Management of the school has sent a condolence message to the family of the deceased and promised to strengthen the structure of the healthcare delivery in the school.
