The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olusola Oyewole, has reiterated the Management’s determination to make the University a world-class institution. Professor Oyewole disclosed this recently during a 3-Day Intensive Training Workshop, organised by the Directorate of Grants Management (DGM). Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Professor Adekojo Waheed, the Vice-Chancellor stated that the University’s strive for world-class status was being achieved by developing the capacities of staff; both Academic and Non-Teaching while admitting academically-sound students. According to him, “we want to be at par with our colleagues worldwide”.

He added that “your contribution, my contribution as well as our contributions” would make FUNAAB to be at par with the best Universities in the world. In his presentation, the Guest Speaker at the occasion, who is also the Secretary-General, Association of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (AVCNU/CVC), Professor Michael Faborode, said research was pivotal to economic growth, adding that it also addressed societal challenges. He noted that being a good teacher entailed being a good researcher. Professor Faborode, whose presentation was titled, “Grant Management/Administration Conflict or Compliments?”, stated that researchers should not conduct research just for the fun of it but for development, adding that before conducting a research, the core competencies should be identified. He advised that Universities should take advantage of NgREN, an innovation of the Federal Government, which FUNAAB was already connected to through networking with other Nigerian Universities and the rest of the world.

Earlier, the Director of DGM, Dr. Kolawole Adebayo, stated that five African countries were represented at the workshop, as he expressed his gratitude to Management for making the workshop a reality. Dr. Adebayo, a FUNAAB Scholar, chronicled the past leadership at the DGM since its inception to date, noting that in just two years, the Directorate had been able to increase the grants that accrued to it from about $3million to $20million. He said the Vice-Chancellor had already mandated the Directorate to train newly-appointed Academic Staff, adding that it does not really matter where one gathers knowledge but what was more important is the benefit of acquired knowledge to mankind. His words: “the academic is one big family as you can be in Ilorin today and Swaziland tomorrow”.
