The National Universities Commission (NUC), has granted the Federal University Gusau, approval to commence five (5) undergraduate academic programmes in the newly-established College of Health Sciences of the University. The approval was contained in a memo ref: NUC/AP/F39/VOL.1/59, dated 11th December 2024 and signed by Abubakar M. Girei, Ag. Director, Academic Planning, on behalf of the Acting Executive Secretary of the NUC, Mr. Chris Maiyaki.
The memo which was addressed to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mu'azu Abubakar Gusau, listed the approved academic programmes as:
(a) MBBS. Medicine and Surgery
(b) B. N.Sc. Nursing Science
(c) B.PT. Physiotherapy
(d) B.DS. Dental Surgery and
(e) B.Sc. Human Nutrition and Dietetics.
The NUC approval also covered the commencement of the B.Sc. Geography undergraduate programme in the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences. According to the NUC document, all the approved full-time programmes are to take effect from the 2024/2025 academic session.
The approved College of Health Sciences is expected to serve as a cornerstone for nurturing the next generation of healthcare professionals doctors, dentists, nurses, physiotherapists and nutritionists, who will be adequately equipped to meet the evolving challenges of modern healthcare provisioning and delivery.
It would be recalled that a high-powered NUC Resource Verification team visited the University from October 22nd to 23rd 2024, during which it assessed the level of readiness for the commencement of the programmes and received firm commitment from the Prof. Mu'azu Abubakar Gusau led administration to ensure their effective takeoff when given the nod.
