FG Maintains No Date For Resumption Of Schools, 78 Private Varsities Insist They Are Ready To Resume

The Federal Government through the Minister of State Education, Mr. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba has said that the date for schools resumption has not yet been decided upon.

Mr. Chukwuemeka stated that stakeholders were being engaged to ascertain the date for the full re-opening of the nation's schools and admonished students to exercise more patience with the government.

He added that measures were being put in place to ensure academic activities return to normalcy as soon as possible.

He disclosed that he and the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, met with some stakeholders of tertiary institutions earlier in the day on the issue. Nwajiuba said “about 78 privately-owned universities are insisting that they were ready for resumption” while the response from government-owned universities was still “50-50”.

He said that after aggregating opinions, he would return to the Presidential Task Force (PTF) to review the situation and then go ahead to make a pronouncement. The Minister urged students of tertiary institutions protesting the continued closure of their schools to be a little more patient with the government.

Recall, that the Federal Government had earlier announced the closure of all schools following the outbreak of COVID-19 in March.
