FG Inaugurates Panel To Look into UNILAG Crisis

The Federal Government has today inaugurated the Presidential Visitation Panel that was set up last week to intevene in the crisis in University of Lagos (UNILAG). The panel was inaugurated by the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, on behalf of President Muhammad Buhari.

The Visitation Panel, which is led by Professor Tukur Sa’ad, has six other members as follows: Barrister Victor Onuoha; Professor Ikenna Onyido; Professor Ekanem Braide; Professor Adamu K Usman; Chief Jimoh Bankole and Barrister Grace Ekanem Secretary.

The minister warned the members of the panel against interference with the activities of the university management and urged all stakeholders in the University of Lagos to fully cooperate with the panel and to allow it to work unhindered.

Recalling the crisis that bedeviled the University of Lagos, Mallam Adamu regretted that, “The face-off has lingered on unabated, in spite of several interventions by the leadership of the Federal Ministry of Education, many stakeholders and the National Universities Commission [NUC), eventually leading to the removal of Professor Oluwatoyin Temitayo Ogundipe as Vice Chancellor by the University Governing Council during its meeting of Wednesday, 12th August 2020."

The panel is expected to look into the crisis in the university and submit recommendations towards repositioning the institution to its pride of place in the Nigerian university system within two weeks.

Responding to this, the Chairman of the panel, Prof. Tukur Sa’ad, appreciated the President for finding him and other members worthy of the task and assured that the confidence placed on them by the president will be justified at the end of the task.
