He said “Transforming Education in Nigeria: Implications for the Future’’ the summit’s theme was apt, adding that President Goodluck Jonathan’s transformation agenda had education as major focus for economic development.

In his contribution, Prof. PAI Obanya, Chairman, Board of West African Examinations Council (WAEC), said that the government was yet to get things right in the education sector.

Obanya described the level of degradation in the sector as “unfortunate”, regretting that the “Nigerian Federalism” was affecting the way policies were being made for education sector.

He called for the review of the education management system in the country, and suggested that knowledgeable teachers should be brought into the system.

“We need to bring the right teachers into the system, the input we have today is what is affecting the output in the system,’’ Obanya said.

He also called on the government to fast track the implementation of the national teachers’ policy document.
