The management of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti has shut down the institution indefinitely which resulted in a mass protest by the students.
It was learnt that the Rector of the institution, Dr. Taiwo Akande, ordered the closure of the polytechnic following the protracted strike action by labour unions in the institution.
ASUP, the Non-Academic Staff Union and the Senior Staff Union of Nigeria Polytechnics of Fed poly Ado has been on strike protesting against Akande’s leadership style which they said was against their interest
However, in a statement issued by the Deputy Registrar, Information, Mr. Ade Adeyemi-Adejolu, the rector said in the statement that the decision was taken on behalf of the Academic Board of Studies.
The statement also claimed that the closure was a mid-semester break for its full time programme and directed all full time students to return home with immediate effect and await further instructions.
This did not go down well with the student who took to the streets demanding the removal of the rector over failure to reconcile with the aggrieved unions.
The students further accused the management of being insensitive towards the welfare of the students.
They students who were seen with placards for an end to the strike embarked upon by the unions which they said was affecting them.
