Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, on Saturday, praised the teachers in the state for their contributions to the improvement noticed in the 2013 West African Examinations Council (WAEC) results in the state.
Speaking at the 2013 World Teachers’ Day held in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, Fayemi, who was represented by his deputy, Prof. Modupe Adelabu, said Ekiti recorded 52 per cent in this year’s WAEC results contrary to 20 per cent recorded in 2012.
While promising more government’s attentions for teachers in terms of human capital development and remunerations, Dr. Fayemi hinged the upward trend in WAEC results on government’s strides in the renovation of all schools, distribution of laptops to students and teachers, among other intervention programmes.
The governor, who presented four brand new cars to the best teachers in primary and secondary schools, assured that his government would continue to work harmoniously with teachers and other workers in the state for rapid development in the education sector.
Branding education as a critical sector in the state, the Commissioner for Education, Kehinde Ojo, advised the teachers to uphold professionalism and strive hard to restore education to its pride of place in the state.
The Commissioner urged them to continue to complement government’s efforts in its efforts to rejuvenate the education sector and put Ekiti on the world map in the area of education.
Chairmen of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), Sola Adigun, and his counterpart in Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Samuel Akosile, demanded the full implementation of the 27.5 per cent Teachers Peculiar Allowance in the state.
They, however, lauded Fayemi for implementing 16 per cent of
the special allowance, stating the gesture has further promoted cordial relationship between the government and workers.
