EKSU suspends academic activities as students protest against late payment levies

The Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado-Ekiti, has suspended academic activities at the institution after students staged a protest against the imposition of a N5,000 late registration fee by the university.

The students, led by their SUG President, Ogunsanya Dotun at about 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, converged at the university gate for the demonstration, disrupting both human and vehicular movements in and outside the institution.

It was gathered that the school management had earlier announced that late payment of school fees would attract a N10,000 penalty fee. But the students, through the students’ union, expressed dissatisfaction with the policy and urged the management to rescind the decision. In response to complaints, the university announced a reduction of the penalty fee from N10,000 to N5,000, but the students insisted that the decision was exploitative and should be rescinded

To forestall the breakdown of law and order, the university management issued a circular announcing the suspension of academic activities for two weeks while the protest was ongoing.
