The Lions Club, Ajao Estate, District 404B, Lagos has urged governments at all levels not to relent in their efforts to upgrade primary education.
A former president of the club, Mr. Georius Olurin, made this call during the investiture of Mr. Ibitayo Wasiu as the club’s 10th president.
According to Olurin, the club, in its desire to support education development, has distributed exercise books and other educational materials to pupils in the area.
He said, “In our bid to assist the government to develop education, the club gave out 500 pieces of exercise books to the pupils of Ajao Estate Primary School. This happened the day the District Governor visited us and you needed to see the joy in the faces of the pupils and their teachers.
“That means that our primary and secondary schools need more attention. It shows why governments at various levels should not neglect primary education, because it is a necessity for other things to go on well.
“Assisting the less privileged and enriching education are memorable things that I cannot forget or stop doing.”
Guest speaker at the event, Mr. Godwin Idemudia, advised the Federal Government to dedicate the majority of its resources to education and youth development.
Speaking on the topic, ‘Youth empowerment as an Important Factor in Economic Development’, he said, “All that is needed from the government is to ensure proper allocation of resources.
“Education needs more attention in the country. The way we are running our educational system, especially at the grassroots, does not show that we really want development.”
The new president, however, assured that his administration would devote more attention to assisting youths.
Wasiu said, “Having known what the club stands for, this administration will strive to protect and assist the less privileged, and also empower youths in all facets of life, including education.”
