To improve the quality of teaching and learning in primary and secondary schools, the proprietor of Pacific Schools, Shasha, Lagos, Mr. Remi Omosowon, has urged the authorities not to lower the entry requirements in colleges of education.
He stated this on Wednesday in an interview with our correspondent.
According to him, lowering entry requirements for candidates suggests that education courses are only for mediocre persons. He said, “The lowering of entry requirements for courses at the National Certificate for Education level creates the impression that education candidates cannot compete with their university counterparts.
“Again, education courses seem to be seen as the last resort for candidates who could not meet up with university requirements.”
Omosowon, who also frowned on the practice where quacks operate private primary and secondary schools, accused education inspectors and the Nigerian Academy of Education for neglecting their duties.
He said, “It is ridiculous that some states are encouraging some of these quacks to thrive. They have three categories of schools -approved, approvable and others, which they allow to co-exist. This is wrong, and should be stopped.”
A qualified teacher who has the mastery of his subject, he added, would perform optimally.
He said, “When pupils are well taught and they have text books and reference books, there is no reason for failure.
“For example, in literature, we give them the textbooks for them to read and summarise. And when they come to the class, the pupils one after the other relate what they have read.”
