Staff of three Colleges of Education in Delta State, under the aegis of Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, COEASU, have notified the state government of their intention to join in the on-going nationwide strike.
The union’s intention was contained in a letter addressed to the state Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Hope Eghagha, by chairmen of the three chapters of COEASU, Dr. A. Ossai of College of Education, Agbor; E. Isitoah of College of Eduaction, Warri and C. Itedjere of College of Physical Education, Mosogar.
They said that they were embarking on the strike due to the inability of the state government to settle the nine-point demand, which they had earlier presented.

According to them, the demands of the union presented to the state government include non-remittance of accrued pensions made up of state government 15 percent counterpart contribution and members contributed pension to the Pension Administrator; non-implementation of 65 years retirement age for academic staff and haphazard implementation of migration to CONTISS 15.
Other demands include forceful migration of their colleagues into the e-payment system; over-taxation and non-refund of over-deducted taxes; forceful inclusion of state Colleges of Education in the National Housing Fund Scheme and non-release of funds to accommodate sabbatical leave.
They added that they were on strike due to lack of office accommodation for lecturers and non-constitution of the colleges’ Governing Councils. The labour leaders lamented that it was worrisome that the state government had not meaningfully addressed the issues, which principally border on the welfare of academic staff of Colleges of Education in the state.
