CHAIRMAN of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Delta State University, DESLU, Abraka branch, Dr. Emmanuel Mordi, Tuesday, asked the Delta State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ikechukwu Aduba, to produce dead or alive, a female lecturer in the institution, Dr. Mercy Mokobia, who was kidnapped, April 9.
He said lecturers in the university were worried about the fate of Dr. Mokobia, a lecturer in the Science Education Department, as the police had not said anything about her whereabouts since she was abducted from her residence, even though some suspects, including a pastor, had been arrested.
Speaking to reporters in Warri, Mordi said: “Each time we ask the Commissioner of Police about our colleague, he tells us that he is not a magician. ASUU, DELSU, may have to embark on a strike after the current national strike for the police to produce our member that was kidnapped.
“We are afraid that we are not safe if kidnappers can come to our environment and kidnap a lecturer and nobody knows where she is. No fewer than 20 lecturers had been kidnapped in this university since 2011. The commissioner came to ASUU congress, when we were about to embark on strike some time ago, saying that they made some arrests. Alright, but we still do not know where our member is , this is getting to three months now. His best is not enough.
“He must tell us clearly and unambiguously what has happened to Dr. Mercy Mokobia and where she is. If she is dead, we want to know and her remains must be found, if she had been sold into slavery and taken to another country, we want to know also.”
Mordi said he had the privilege of meeting a top government official in the office of the National Security Adviser in Abuja and was not impressed with what government was doing to stem kidnapping, adding “All they are concerned about is Boko Haram.”
