Court reinstates 86 sacked EKSU staff

Eighty-six staff members of the Ekiti State University (EKSU) whose appointments were terminated by the university on December 5, 2019, have been reinstated.

The aggrieved staff, comprising of teaching and non-teaching staff members, had dragged the institution to the National Industrial Court sitting in Akure over their unlawful sack, and on January 21, 2021, the court delivered judgement in their favour. The institution, however, appealed the judgment at the Court of Appeal.

On Monday, April 4, 2022, Justice Abdul-Azeez Waziri, of the state Appeal court sitting in Ado-Ekiti, upheld the judgment of the industrial court and dismissed EKSU's appeal, and ordered the reinstatement of the employees with payment of their full benefits.

The university was also directed to pay N50,000 to each respondent as cost and payment of their three months salaries arrears.
