Commissioner accuses politicians of influencing teachers' posting in Delta state

The Delta State Commissioner of Basic and Secondary Education, Mr Patrick Ukah has stated that politicians are influencing the posting of their relatives who are teachers to urban areas at the detriment of teachers who are made to report at rural areas.

Mr Ukah mentioned this when he appeared before the state House of Assembly Committee on Education in Asaba. He remarked that the unnecessary pressure being mounting on ministry officials by politicians in the posting of teachers has had a negative impact on the improved standard of education in rural communities.

The Commissioner urged the committee to stop politicians from mounting undue pressure on ministry officials to post relatives to urban centres. He also identified unchecked vandalism of school properties as another factor militating against educational standards.

According to him, an advocacy committee consisting of traditional rulers, youth bodies and vigilance organisations have been set up by the ministry to look into the vandalism trend.

Chairman, House Committee on Education, Charles Emetulu assured the Commissioner of the committee’s readiness to address the challenge through effective legislation.
