Courseware Developer Job at Code for Africa (CfA)

About the Role

  • We are recruiting for a mid-level role as an Online Courseware Developer with strong pedagogical expertise and extensive experience in curriculum creation (using e-learning technologies)..
  • The candidate will join our pan-African Data Academy and may be based at any of our hubs in Kenya, Nigeria or South Africa. We are also open to exceptional applicants from elsewhere in Africa.
  • CfA’s Data Academy, which spearheads our training partnerships and data analysis and storytelling initiatives. It also includes CfA communities such as the WanaData women data science/storytelling network and the africanDRONE civic drone community, as well as the sensors.AFRICA sensor journalism initiative, with a network of more than 50+ newsroom and university partners across Africa. The Data Academy is also custodian of other major CfA public infrastructure, such as the continent’s largest open data portal, open.AFRICA, and Africa’s largest census data portal, HURUMap.
  • The Courseware Developer will be CfA’s in-house ‘architect’ for designing the structure of training courses. The candidate reports to the Data Academy’s Senior Programme Manager and will work with the support of CfA’s wider Data Academy team of editorial experts, data analysts and digital designers in 20 African countries, as well as external domain experts in order to achieve set programmes or module objectives. The candidate will champion CfA’s Academy Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), ensuring that it is on par with the world’s best.
  • The successful candidate will join CfA’s Data Academy team to lead a revamp/refresh of our existing MOOC platform, restructuring and updating existing courseware, while also improving the functionality and user experience on the platform (with support from CfA’s tech and content teams).
  • A major focus for the role will be to build courses that are modular, with core lessons teaching key skills, complimented by elective modules that offer topic/tool specific add-on skills. CfA courseware is intended to be flexible enough to be easily customised or repackaged for different audiences by our in-country staff trainers or university partners. The MOOC courseware also serves as the master curricula for teaching kits for our in-person/offline training workshops, as well as template course materials for our university partners.
  • CfA’s courseware developer will be responsible for benchmarking our learning materials on global best-practise, and will also lead our joint development of new courses with both internal and external stakeholders to create learning solutions.
  • The candidate should have a strong strategic analysis and critical thinking skills, as our projects are varied and fast-paced, so you need to quickly understand and learn new things. You will need to possess a keen attention to detail and a good eye for both quality and aesthetics. You should be comfortable handling multiple tasks with multiple ongoing deadlines and should have previous experience working on the digital collaboration tools that CfA uses, such as Slack, Google Drive, and Trello.

Responsibilities
Your daily responsibilities will include:

  • Conceptualising and designing master curricula, in consultation with CfA programme teams and external domain experts, for modular, task-driven experiential courses that function as both self-directed e-learning and as in-person courseware of instructors.
  • Developing courseware support materials, including facilitator guides and user-manuals; participant materials and exercises/assignments; and course handouts/toolkits.
  • Repacking the master curriculum for offline/in-person presentation, including developing presentation slides (PowerPoint, etc) with instructor talking points/notes; class handouts and participant handbooks, etc.
  • Cultivate and manage a pool of thematic experts that CfA can call upon to co-author courses and/or present flagship classes.
  • Proactively measure user experience and participant trends/feedback to improve the quality and effectiveness of CfA courseware.
  • Monitor overall usage/completion rates and trends for CfA’s online MOOC and other webinar-based learning programmes, to offer actionable insights to improve the effectiveness of CfA’s Academy programmes.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the implementation of the training courses
  • Monitor trends in teaching practices, and explore and recommend new technologies that will enhance Data Academy’s training model
  • Advise CfA’s trainers on the following aspects of the training content: accessibility, readability, potential for learner engagement and fit with learning objectives.
  • Work with CfA engagement team to promote CfA training programmes including the MOOC site to the wider public and increase traffic and engagement on the site.

Required Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or significant proven expertise in any related disciplines with equivalent combination of practical experience and professional training/certification in any of the following: instructional design and learning technologies, computer science and education, information technology, or other closely related fields.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in training development, creating blended learning solutions for both instructor-led and self-paced training programmes.
  • Experience with using multimedia and online web instructional materials, especially for a web-based Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as WordPress’ LearnDash platform.
  • Experience assessing training needs, writing lessons objectives, and storyboarding course outlines/learning journeys.
  • Ability to work creatively and accurately under pressure with excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to multitask and self-organise, and prioritise work when managing multiple timelines and schedules.
  • Excellent leadership, team-building, and self-management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.  

Preferred:
Preferred Qualifications and Skills include:

  • Knowledge of data journalism and/or multimedia storytelling, or civic technology and civic engagement, or digital democracy approaches.
  • Experience with developing courseware formats for new communication channels, including using mobile platforms as WhatsApp or equivalent social messaging platforms.
  • Experience with creating or customising courseware content using InDesign (or equivalent tools), video scribe, audio/narration editing tools and other e-learning design technologies is also an asset.
  • Expertise in adult learning and all aspects of instructional design for various formats, including instructor-led, self-directed e-learning, task-driven experiential learning, webinar-driven interactive learning, mobile optimised courseware, and various types of performance support.
  • Willingness to teach others and learn/pioneer new techniques.
  • Experience in remote collaboration tools, including Slack, Google Drive, and Trello to manage workflows.
  • The ability to communicate and work effectively with curriculum or domain experts and project team members who work remotely and in different time zones.

About the Role

  • The successful candidates will join CfA’s transnational CivicSignal research team, to craft and manage the content production process and output for CfA’s content production teams. These include iLab, our digital forensics investigative team, and PesaCheck, our fact-checking team, as well as the CivicSignal research team. Outputs take the form of research reports, briefing documents and presentations, among others.
  • As part of a multinational team within a growing organisation, you must be agile and able to thrive in a multicultural environment. You will need to work easily with people from different backgrounds who may speak different languages. 

Responsibilities
Your daily responsibilities will include:

  • Managing the editorial production process and content diaries for CfA’s teams producing analytic and investigative reports.

  • Fundamentally, CivicSignal addresses issues and topics that impact democracies and civil society, seeking to provide the data and analysis necessary for government and citizens to make informed decisions. The projects range across a broad spectrum, including internal and external mis/disinformation, media sustainability, monitoring of hate speech and xenophobia, and general media ecosystem mapping.

About the Role

  • The successful candidate will join CfA’s Knowledge team. This team spearheads data liberation, digitisation and analysis for internal programmes at CfA as well as projects at external partners, (such as media and universities); leading all training and mentoring efforts; and the production of data storytelling or infographics as part of our mission to improve citizen and civic watchdog access to actionable information. 
  • You will head up CfA’s Academy.Africa programme.
  • You will lead a team of trainers and curriculum developers in the design and implementation of all training components in CfA’s projects, using a combination of different learning modalities such as self-/instructor-led and online/in-person training.
  • You will ensure that the curriculums, courseware and training components are of the highest quality. 
  • You will be the product champion for CfA’s Massive Open Online Course (MOOC).
  • You will work closely with subject matter experts and CfA’s programmatic teams to drive the customisation and packaging of project deliverables into self-directed coursewares.
  • You will work closely with the curriculum developers to ensure that all content is maintained and updated so that it remains relevant and best-of-breed. 
  • Additionally, you will be responsible for the management of the programme, including managing project work plans to ensure the timely delivery of project activities; capturing and tracking programme/project targets against log frames; assisting the finance team to track and manage project budgets; and coordinating with the logistics team to identifying project resource needs and putting in place procurement plans.
  • You should feel comfortable working with a specialised training audiences such as journalists and civil society organisations.
  • And, you will work closely with CfA’s business development team and the Knowledge Senior Programme Manager to help the Academy programme expand its reach across Africa through new projects and institutional relationships.

Responsibilities
Your daily responsibilities will include:

  • Manage day-to-day operations of the Academy programme, including training management and delivery, curriculum development, coordination and facilitation.
  • Lead the delivery of on-site, online and blended training events across Africa. 
  • Build, manage and support a team of data analysts, trainers, and curriculum developers who will work with you to deliver top-notch and impactful training programs across Africa. 
  • Create and implement quality assurance tools to evaluate the standards of training, recommend development areas for facilitators and manage the development process.
  • Lead Academy project monitoring, evaluating and learning efforts by contributing to defining, reviewing, and helping to track core metrics of training programmes, which includes the application process, learning activities, curriculum development, mentoring sessions, coaching sessions, and peer engagement.
  • Consistently review and update all Academy training content and resources and introduce new content when appropriate.
  • Work closely with the online curriculum developer and CfA’s in-house and external subject matter experts to create online courseware for CfA’s MOOC platform that is customised to the African countries where CfA operates.
  • Contribute to the development of training-of-trainers (TOT) curricula and processes with the aim of building a cadre of trainers.
  • Participate in CfA’s partner’s capacity assessment and identify capacity building needs for the Academy programming.
  • Provide timely and regular information on project performance (outputs, outcomes and impacts) to Knowledge’s Senior Programme Manager to ensure smooth programme implementation, address challenges and improve the overall programme quality management.
  • Design and consolidate the project reporting database with the distinct requirements of each project/donor (e.g. annual, interim, quarterly reports, etc.), for different stakeholders such as government, donors, and update and track progress to satisfy these in a timely manner.
  • Explore and evaluate new partnerships and initiatives that can significantly increase CfA’s Academy programme footprint in Africa. 

Required
Minimum requirements include:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education / Social / Economic Sciences, Media Studies, Technology, International Development or related fields.
  • 5+ years of educational programme development experience, preferably at development organisations (NGOs/CSO/non-profit), technology/media communities or high-growth startups. 
  • 3+ years managing teams (with direct reports), preferably to design and develop highly technical training programs and curriculum materials.
  • Demonstrable experience in various learning modalities, such as online, in-person led, eLearning, and blended learning methodologies, as well as in individual mentorship.
  • Experience in identifying training and development needs through training needs analysis.
  • Ability to design and produce training materials for various learning modalities 
  • Demonstrable experience in programme and project management, including managing multiple concurrent projects and managing process improvement efforts.
  • Experience building and managing relationships with stakeholders such as media institutions, governments, international organisations, educational institutions, and other private and not-for-profit organisations in the civic technology and media ecosystem.
  • Demonstrable experience managing databases 
  • Excellent written communication skills 
  • Strong administrative skills and precision in handling budgets and contracts.
  • Have an enthusiastic, generous, nimble and hands-on approach.

  • The successful candidate will work with an agile transnational team of other data analysts, digital designers and data journalists in the Data Academy, with additional support from CfA’s software engineering and forensic research teams, in 20 countries across the continent.

About the Role

  • The successful candidate will join CfA’s Knowledge team, which produces data-driven tools and storytelling through the StoryLab for the organisation’s internal projects, as well as supports data desks at a network of external partners across the continent through our Academy network on in-country trainers/mentors. 
  • The team has co-produced projects ranging from award-winning multimedia journalism in the Sucked Dry investigation into land grabs in 11 Nile Basin countries, to data-driven tools such as the GenderGap calculator that gives insight into salary disparities across Africa.
  • The team also builds/maintains major infrastructure such as the continent’s largest open data portal, at open.AFRICA.
  • The Knowledge programme meanwhile also runs the continent’s largest online training portal for digital/data journalists, at the Academy, and is custodian of the WanaData women data science/storytelling community and wider 35,000+ member Hacks/Hackers Africa network.
  • As UI/UX designer, you will bring a strong perspective to your design work while maintaining a design point of view and the impact it can have at scale.
  • You will synthesise the team’s requirements and qualitative inputs, observations, and analysis into highly performing interfaces and user experiences.

Responsibilities
Your daily responsibilities will include:

  • Implement and optimise the UI/UX design strategy of CfA’s web products, both on mobile and Desktop platforms
  • Gather and evaluating user requirements, in collaboration with CfA’s product managers and their stakeholders
  • Illustrate design ideas using storyboards, process flows and sitemaps
  • Design graphic user interface elements, like menus, footers, sidebars, tabs and widgets
  • Leverage collaborative platforms like Miro, Figma to collect feedback and identify blockers
  • Establish creative direction for the company as well as brand guidelines
  • Ensure projects are completed with high quality and on schedule
  • Improve look and feel of CfA’s products, content and brands and enforce the team’s design guidelines
  • Occasionally take part in training and community events as a trainer and help review courseware created to teach data journalism
  • Work proactively and think critically to improve design components of tools and stories created by the data and design team
  • Coordinate with the team on Slack and take part in daily standups and weekly calls.

Requirements
Minimum requirements include:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Arts or Design, Communications or 3 – 5 years of experience in UI/UX and/or web design.
  • Knowledge of layouts, graphic fundamentals, typography, print, and the web
  • Deep knowledge of the Adobe Suite, including PhotoShop, Illustrator and InDesign 
  • Proficiency with Adobe XD or other collaborative UX/UI tools such as Sketch or Figma
  • Able to work with technical staff and projects to create powerful user experiences 
  • Able to work with writers, developers and product managers to plan out visual content across multiple platforms.
  • A portfolio featuring excellent graphic design and UI/UX skills 
  • Excellent eye for details, with a creative mindset and problem solving skills.

Preferred:
Candidates who are able to demonstrate the following will have an advantage:

  • Experience in setting up and customising WordPress or Webflow sites, with frameworks such as Elementor or equivalent
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Multiple languages, such as Kiswahili and French, or other languages spoken in Africa
  • Robust data visualisation skills (including the creation of charts, graphs and maps)
  • Familiarity in HTML / CSS and/or Javascript / MapBox / D3JS
  • Experience in international development and/or social entrepreneurship.

  • Location: Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda or anywhere else in Africa
  • Language: English 
  • Preferred but not required languages: Amharic, Arabic, Hausa, French or Kiswahili.
