Bayero Varsity CAD to Become Africa’s Center for Excellence:

The Bayero University Centre for Dry land Agriculture CDA is to become Africa’s Center for Excellence in Dry Land Agriculture after successfully wining the World Bank grant of $8m, the university’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Abubakar Rasheed, has disclosed.

Speaking at a two-day workshop on the Potentials and Limitations of West African Dry Lands and Research, Prof. Rasheed said the university is proud with the achievements of the centre in terms of research, training capacity and competence.

Rasheed, who was represented by Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration, Prof. Sadiq Isah Radda, said the intervention funds from World Bank and other donor agencies was informed by the CDA’s commitment to its cause and urged other centres in the university to take a cue from CDA.

He charged staff of the centre to take the issue of World Bank funding seriously by ensuring judicious use of the funds.
He said before now, World Bank only invested in primary education, adding that only recently it began to invest in the nation’s tertiary institutions and that only judicious application of such resources would convince the bank to continue to invest more.

Earlier, Director of the Centre, Professor Jibrin Jibrin, said the workshop was organized by the centre to mobilize ideas and information from senior academics with a view to charting a good direction towards conversion of the CDA into Africa Centre of Excellence in Dry land Agriculture.

He said the centre had gone into collaborations with national and international agencies and has been able to attract funding to conduct research and teaching in dry land agriculture. He added that the workshop would go a long in helping the centre towards putting in place the necessary machinery for the full take-off of the CDA as Africa Centre of Excellence in Dry Land Agriculture.
