The Borno Government on Monday paid more than N270 million to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the National Examination Council (NECO) as 2012/2013 examination fees of 33,000 students.
The Commissioner for Education, Malam Inuwa Kubo, presented the cheques for the amount to the organisations at a ceremony in Maiduguri.
He said that the amount represented 75 per cent of the registration fees for the examinations.
“Today’s event marks another milestone in government’s efforts to develop the education sector in the state.
“Government is paying to both WAEC and NECO to cover the registration fees of the estimated 33,000 students who registered for the examinations in the state.
“The amount covers 75 percent of the total registration fees as parents had already paid the 25 percent of the fees earlier,” Kubo said.
He said that the examinations had been conducted successfully in most part of the state, but lamented that some centres could not hold the examinations for security reasons.
Kubo commended the organisations for accepting to conduct fresh examinations for the affected students.
He urged both the organisations to ensure that all the students accessed their results as soon as possible, to enable them to secure admission into tertiary institutions.(NAN)
