Over 98% of Benue Children Out Of School Due to Crisis:

Over 98 per cent of the children in Benue State are out of school because of the frequent attacks by suspected Fulani herdsmen on farmers in the state which resulted in the displacement of scores of persons, the Anglican Bishop of Makurdi Diocese, Rev Nathan Nyom has said.

Nyom who stated this at the weekend said that the development arm of the diocese, Anglican Diocesan Development Society (ADDS), established in 1992, was mandated to carry out a survey to ascertain how the crisis has affected school children.

He said, “From the survey by ADDS, over 98% of the children are out of school, the environments where they live are not child-friendly; they are traumatised due to their physical experience of the crisis and many have lost one or both parents beside other relations.”

Nyom said the dastardly attacks by suspected Fulani herdsmen were perpetrated by terrorists whose aim is to destroy and kill innocent lives for no just reason.

Commending the peace pact recently signed by farmers and the Fulanis, Nyom, however, faulted the non-involvement of  farmers associations in the peace building committee of the federal government and advocated that an ad hoc committee comprising the genuine farmers should be constituted to investigate the remote and immediate causes of the crisis.

“The peace pact that was signed by the Benue committee and the herdsmen was a good initiative but I think it is not complete since the association of farmers was not involved in the peace building committee and  the remote causes of the crisis were not mentioned,” Nyom said. (Leadership)
