Editor (Co-Production)
Job Location: Lagos, Nigeria
Main Duties
- To editorially lead the TV and digital news content for Nigeria and other African countries.
- Lead weekly editorial conferences with the partner broadcaster providing a robust editorial defence of the programme content and treatments
- To lead and motivate a team of journalists to produce high quality content and to encourage original journalism and distinctive, innovative storytelling.
- To co-ordinate, plan, guide and inspire all coverage and lead on major news events.
- To be a key point of liaison with the best possible communication between the BBC and partners and to ensure that editorial and legal guidelines of both broadcasters are met.
- Recruit, deploy, lead, manage, train and develop the staf taking responsibility for the professional development reviews and setting clear and achievable objectives
- Establish a clear and workable forward planning rota to commission and deliver films in a timely and cost efficient mannerWork with the rest of the management team to build an open, collaborative and creative culture.
- To manage commissioning and production budgets effectively.
- To work with BBC News, particularly the Africa TV Editor, the News interactive team and Newsgathering to deliver high quality material.
- To work with visual journalism and production teams to develop compelling TV and digital formats.
- To develop a lively and engaged social media approach to news coverage working very closely with the Languages digital teams.
- To ensure that the potential of news is maximized in all African language output, developing new formats and styles.
- Seek out opportunities for more efficient ways of working in a multiplatform and multilingual environment.
Required Skills Abilities and Experience
- Excellent track record of delivering high impact, multiplatform News content for an African audience.
- The ability to deliver editorial innovation and develop great digital and TV content and stimulate new thinking about news journalism.
- Experience of leading and managing a team of journalists.
- Experience of managing budgets and observing tight financial targets.
- A solid understanding of major Nigerian, African and international news and how to maximize their potential.
- Outstanding written and spoken English. Written and spoken Pidgin or Hausa is desirable.
- Excellent communication skills to establish and develop strong working relationships with colleagues in numerous BBC departments – BBC African Service, BBC Global News, BBC Language Service and with partners.
- Strong planning, negotiation and influencing skills and the ability to co-ordinate and plan news coverage from major events.
- Knowledge of the African media market and the changing needs of the audience.
- Thorough knowledge of African News and international current affairs.
- Strive for diversity of contributors, in terms of gender, ethnicity, disability and age.
- Experience of making sound judgements on matters of editorial sensitivity.
- Knowledge and practical experience of weekly and/or daily journalism.
- A thorough knowledge of all the requirements of the BBC Producer Guidelines and Editorial policies.
- An understanding of the agendas and requirements of the various BBC News international facing platforms and partners.
- A high level of editorial awareness and judgement in line with BBC and News Directorate policy.

Bilingual Reporter – Africa
Job Location: Abuja, Nigeria
The Job
- The Reporter will play a crucial role providing timely, expert and authoritative coverage of news and current affairs events in Nigeria and the surrounding regions, but they will be advising teams on stories in the patch for wider BBC consumption.
- The Reporter will be required to report for multi-platform outlets, including television, online and social media and radio.
The successful candidate must have:
- Outstanding level spoken and written English and Hausa.
- Excellent skills in both TV and Radio scripting and presentation.
- Demonstrated ability to identify strong and distinctive stories.

Country Director
Job Location: Abuja (with regular travel within Nigeria)
Job Purpose
- To lead the development and implementation of the Nigeria country strategy.
- Responsible for building and developing a team to develop and deliver projects to agreed targets and objectives, ensuring compliance with BBC editorial standards in all outputs.
Knowledge, Skills, Training and Experience
- Proven track record of developing and securing donor-funded multiyear international development or media projects, including successfully developing new project ideas, writing proposals, and presenting these persuasively to funders.
- Proven ability to deliver complex development projects to deadlines and within budget, with good track record of donor liaison and reporting.
- Significant experience managing budgets of over £1 million, including demonstrating effective use of resources and value for money.
- Substantial experience in the management of large, diverse teams of staff, including recruitment, management, discipline and professional development
- Demonstrable field-based experience of the international development and/or media-for development market in Africa
- Substantial experience living and working overseas.
- Considerable experience of working in the media or development sector, preferably both.
- Substantial experience living and working overseas.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including experience working with colleagues whose first language is not English.
- A proven track record of forming effective relationships with a range of local and international donors and other partners, including at the highest levels of government and media, managing effective collaboration between partners and stakeholders, including those with differing agendas.
- Strong understanding of and commitment to international development, including the use of media for developmental goals.
- Demonstrable understanding of and preferably experience in media, with the potential to acquire strong editorial skills in order to make sensitive editorial judgements at a senior level.
- Excellent written and spoken English.
- Dynamism, proactivity and personal resilience, and demonstrable ability to adapt to changing and uncertain circumstances.
Desirable:
- Experience working in Nigeria or on projects related to the country.
- Relevant language skills to the country.
