ASUU vows to continue strike if monday talks with FG fails

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has vowed to continue with the ongoing strike which started since December 2011 until all the demands are met.

Speaking with newsmen on a telephone interview, and wired to SchoolGist, the ASUU president accused the government of spreading propaganda in view that the body will call off the strike. He insisted that the government was trying to elude the demand of proper funding for the universities. While praising the senate for passing the bill to increase the retirement age of lecturers from 65 to 70 years, he noted that the bill is still waiting for the president's approval to pass it into law.

It will be recalled that The Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufai, after a meeting with
the various university vice-chancellors in Abuja, had assured students that the strike will be called off on Monday, 22nd Jan due to agreements made with the University VCs. On this light, the ASUU president pointed out that ASUU is not a member of the Association of Vice Chancellors, and therefore the strike cannot be called off by the association, Insisting that the strike will continue until government implements all their demands.

In spite of all these, ASUU and Government will now meeting on Monday and if the Government agrees with meeting the demands, the National Executives will be expected to have series of meetings to agree on when to call off the strike.

“However, with the intervention of Mr. President, I believe the solution will come faster than expected”
Awuzie stated.
