The Academic Staff Union of Universities have come to a conclusion to embark on the 1 month after a lengthy meeting that dragged into the wee hours of Monday 14th February, 2022, the National Executive Council, NEC, of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, came to a conclusion to embark on one-month warning strike to press home its demands from the government.
A source at the meeting held in Lagos told schoolgist.ng in confidence that the strike is to allow the Federal Government do the needful failure to which the union would go on an indefinite strike.
According to ASUU, “We just want to give the government a long rope hoping that it would see the need to avoid a total paralysis of academic activities in the nation’s universities. We are parents too and have our children in the system but we cannot watch and allow the total collapse of education in the country”.
Furthermore, our agitation is in the best interest of all stakeholders which includes students, parents and guardians because when the system we are demanding for is achieved, it will be in the best interest of us all. Despite Well known Nigerians wading into the matter, the government has failed to meet with our demands. Our National President would explain more when he briefs the press later today,” he said.
Remember that ASUU has been agitating for a number of demands including the payment of Earned Academic Allowance, revitalization fund, the replacement of the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System, IPPIS, with the University Transparency and Accountability System UTAS, among others.
With the strike embarking today, hopefully the government will be moved to heed to our demands by doing the needful as earlier agreed.

ASUU, NEC Converge in Abuja on Thursday Night 21st February, 2022.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities alongside the National Executive Council (NEC) held a meeting on Thursday, the 13th of October to make a decision on the calling off the strike embarked on 8months ago (February 14th). After 7hrs meeting with the National Executive Council, which was preceded by votes from all ASUU branches nationwide, it was concluded that the strike be called off based on the promises and commitments of the FG as regards their demands.
According to the national chairman, ASUU, prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, if the FG had been responsive to the union, there wouldn’t had been any strike action in the first place.
Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke will be addressing the general public today (friday, 14th October, 2022) to make an official announcement as regards the calling off of the 8months prolonged strike.
