The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Kano zone has decried the abuse of due process in appointment of vice chancellors by visitors to the universities in the country.
This was contained in a statement yesterday by the zonal coordinator, Kano zone Dr. Rabiu Nasiru at the end of a zonal meeting in Kaduna which described the trend as dangerous and a attack on university autonomy.
"The zone notes with shock, dismay and total disbelief, the extent to which some governors, who are visitors to their universities, go about in flagrant violation of the laws establishing their universities and process of the appointment of vice chancellors in recent times.
"This trend started with Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma and has now reared its head in Rivers state university of Science and Technology (RSUST), Kano state University of Science and Technology (KUST), Kaduna state University (KASU), Imo state University, Owerri (IMSU) and host of others," he stressed.
Nasiru said the violation include refusal to constitute Governing Councils of the universities in order to pave way for arbitrariness by the visitors, VCs and acting VCs.
He emphasized that the case of RSUST is most alarming and synonymous to destroying the very existence of the university system.
"The current VC of the university, Professor B. B. Fakea was illegally appointed to serve for a term after which he contested again and came last among the five applicants interviewed and yet he was reappointed illegally by the visitor, Governor Rotimi Ameachi.
