ASUP Strike Pull-Out: Federal Poly, Jigawa Calls Off 10-Month Strike

ASUP Strike Pull-Out: Hussaini Adamu Federal Polytechnic, Kazaure in Jigawa State, Calls  Off 10-Month-Old Strike:

 The struggle by Academic Staff of Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) to ensure that their demands are met before they return to classrooms may be suffering a setback with some polytechnics pulling out of the strike.

On Wednesday, the Hussaini Adamu Federal Polytechnic, Kazaure in Jigawa State, pulled out of the strike after its congress. Last month, the Federal Polytechnic, Kebbi, also suspended the strike.

Chairman of the union in Jigawa, Comrade Sa’idu Abdullahi, in a communiqué issued after the emergency congress, said the suspension was to allow students complete the disrupted second semester of 2012/2013 academic session.

    Comrade Abdullahi told newsmen that the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) gave approval for the polytechnic to start eight new programmes and that the period within which it is supposed to commence them will elapse in the next two months.

    He said Kazaure chapter of the union is still in support of the national body because “the issues in contention are actually directed towards the proper strengthening and development of polytechnic education in general.”

    Rector of the polytechnic, Dr Kabir Ibrahim Matazu, who is also the chairman, Council of Heads of Polytechnics and Colleges of Technology in Nigeria (COHEADS) commended the union for calling off the ten-month-old strike. (Daily Trust)
