ASUP, COEASU Crisis: NANS President Calls For Intervention

President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Mr. Yinka Gbadebo, has called on delegates at the ongoing National Conference to intervene in the 8-month lingering crisis which has led to the closure of Polytechnics and Colleges of Education across the country.

Mr. Gbadebo, who is also a delegate representing the student’s body, made the call yesterday while contributing to the debate on the speech of President Goodluck Jonathan delivered at the inauguration of the conference on Monday, March 17, 2014.

Stating that students of polytechnics and colleges of education have been at home for more than eight months, he observed that no nation can be truly great without priority attention given to education.

“I believe, Mr. Chairman, that in building a truly great nation our foremost priority must be education. On the 17th of March at our inauguration, by the special grace of God, I prevented a national embarrassment that students of colleges of education and polytechnics would have caused by storming this place in protest.

“I want to succinctly appeal, Mr. Chairman, that in finding solution to the problems of this country, I believe the solution must start from here. I want to appeal that instead of recommending, we should address some issues here and now,” he said.

He thereafter recommended that the conference should invite the Minister of Education and the President of ASUP for a roundtable discussion to put an end to the unfortunate crisis.

Reacting to the suggestion, however, several delegates opined that it was not within the mandate of the conference to undertake the said recommendation. (Leadership)
