Less than two weeks after a 300 Level student of University of Benin (UNIBEN) was gruesomely murdered at its Ugbowo campus, another 300 Level student of the University was on Tuesday night murdered by unknown assailants.

The deceased whose name was given simply as James, a Vocational and Technical Education student was said to have been shot dead at Ekosodin, a satellite community of the Ugbowo campus of the University.

The corpse of the deceased was sighted in a white-coloured police Hilux van at the Accident and Emergency Ward of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) on Wednesday morning.

His white T-Shirt and lemon coloured knickers were drenched with his blood and his head shattered and almost double in size, apparently because of being shut at close range.

One of the University’s students who did not want his name in print for personal and safety reasons, confirmed the incident, said James was on his way home at about 11 pm after watching a football match at one of the viewing centres in the community when he was killed by the assailants.

“It might not be unconnected with cult activities on the campus. But I was aware of what happens at Ekosodin at nights. I just don’t know why he decided to risk his life like that. What a pity,” the source said.

It will be recalled that Ejiroghene Gbenedio, a 300-Level student of the Department of Chemistry in the Faculty of Physical Sciences, was hacked to death with a battle axe at about 7 pm on Friday, 24 October, 2014.

When contacted on phone, UNIBEN’s Public Relations Officer, Harrison Osarenren, promised to make an enquiry into the alleged murder and call back. But as at the time of filling this report, he was yet to call back.

Meanwhile, no fewer than 10 university students travelling to Bayelsa from Lagos and Ibadan were on Tuesday night involved in a multiple motor accident along Ore-Benin highway, between Okada and Ogbemudia farm.

The accident involved an articulated truck and two commercial buses belonging to Onitsha-based Cross Country and Warri-based Agofure Motors.

The students who were going for orientation ?for the Batch C of the National Youth Service Corps, in Bayelsa State were travelling in a 15-seater Cross Country bus.

Reports had it  that the bus, apparently on top speed, rammed into a moving articulated truck in the front, while the bus directly behind it (Agofure Motors) also rammed into the Cross Country bus.

Six of the Corps members who sustained serious injuries were rushed to the UBTH, where they are currently receiving medical attention.

As at press time, authorities of the Orientation camp of the NYSC in Bayelsa State had been notified of the incident.
