Consequent to the various controversy and allegations trailing the sexual abuse case between Deeper life high school and the parents of an abused student, the Akwa Ibom state government has taken a step back from the case giving room for the police to head the investigation.
The case has been moved to the Sexual Assault Referral Centre in the state for further medical investigation, and also transferred investigation of the incident to the police.
The state education commissioner Mr Ememobong said the victim’s parents and other interested parties gave their consent for the boy to be taken to the referral centre which is at the Immanuel General Hospital, Eket.
The commissioner revealed that government's withdrawal from the case was as a result the advise by the attorney general of the state to hands off the case, especially since the police were already on the case too. Other organizations such as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Trafficking, Mirabelle Centre, FIDA Akwa Ibom, Sexual and Gender-based Violence Response Unit of the Ministry of Justice, Akwa Ibom State, were also interested in the case.
