Adamawa State Polytechnic Yola has been shut down by the institution's management and students sent home after violent acts by some final year students supposedly celebrating the conclusion of their program.
The students were said to have been going about their celebration in a manner considered unbecoming by officials of the polytechnic who told them to stop it. The students went wild instead and security operatives, in a joint police-military operation had to be called in.
The security operatives reportedly fired tear gas to disperse the increasingly unruly youths who calmed down only to rise again moments after and burn valuable facilities.
The management of the polytechnic announced the closure on Thursday, March 25 in a statement signed by the Rector and sent to all Heads of Department, Deans of faculties, and the chief security officer.
The statement reads;
This is to inform all staff and students that for security reasons the Polytechnic is closed with immediate effect. Students are to vacate the hostel and school premises immediately.
Students that are yet to finish examination are to write their examination after Easter break
Comply with the directives and give peace a chance.
