Abia State University has been adjudged as one of the best performing Universities in the October/November 2021 National Universities Commission (NUC) Accreditation exercise of academic programmes in the country.
In the report of the exercise addressed to the Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished Professor Onyemachi M. Ogbulu, the Commission commended the University Management for its dexterity and administrative prowess at ensuring quality manpower, standard curricula in the various academic programmes, in line with the NUC Basic Minimum Standards, strict implementation of academic regulations, infrastructural development and research oriented policies.

According to the NUC guideline, programmes with full accreditation will be re-visited after five (5) years, while those on interim would be re-visited after two (2) years.
Apart from Medicine and Surgery which had denied accreditation, due mainly to extraneous factors beyond the control of the University, the performance of the University was rated very highly.
The recent public outcry and comments from the public on the denial of accreditation to Medicine and Surgery is most unfortunate, considering that it was not the only programme that faced accreditation during the same exercise. Understandably, it is one of the flagship programmes of the University with enviable pedigree of successes.
It is on record that several other Universities have had similar experiences which were later rectified. Abia State University will therefore, not be an exception.
We commend the Visitor to the University and Scholar-in-Governance, His Excellency Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, Ph.D for his untiring efforts at assisting the University in restoring full accreditation for Medicine and Surgery, which we hope will be achieved very soon.
In congratulating the Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished Professor Onyemachi M. Ogbulu, Governing Council, Management and Senate for the feat, a cross section of the University community appreciated the pragmatism of the Vice-Chancellor in handling the accreditation of such large number of academic programmes at the same time, the highest by any Administration in the University.
