5 Students Have Been Remanded Over Involvement in Riot

5 Students Have Been Remanded Over Involvement in Riot:

Five students of Ansar-ud-Deen High School Osogbo, who were involved in last week’s riot in Osogbo have been remanded in prison custody by an Osogbo Magistrate court.

The students: Isaac Awuzie, (18) Sulaiman Amidu (18) Gafar Tijani (16) Akeem Jelili (17) and Badmus Isiaka (15) were denied bail by the court presided over by Magistrate Olusola Aluko, who ordered their counsel to formally apply for their bail.

According to the charge sheet read in the court, the students on December 18, 2013 conspired together to embark on illegal riot contrary to section 517 of the state criminal law 2003.

It added that the suspects unlawfully assembled with sticks and stones and jeopardized school activities, an offence contrary to section 71 of the state criminal law.

Also the students were alleged to have conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause breach of public peace and stole 25 pieces of exercise books, belonging to the state government, valued at N500, an offence contrary to sections 249(D) and 390 of the state penal code.

The Police Prosecutor, Mr Taiwo Adegoke, an inspector told the court that the students committed the offences at about 8:30 am inside the school premises located at Testing Ground area, Iludun, Osogbo.

The Presiding Magistrate ordered that the counsel apply for the accused persons bail formally and ordered the students to be remanded in Ilesa prison custody.

He then adjourned the matter till February 4, 2014 for mention.
