300-level UNICAL student reportedly dies over N200 medical card

A year three student of the Department of Library and Information Science, University of Calabar reportedly lost her life over the weekend after she was denied medical care for not having the university’s medical consulting card worth N200.

The deceased student identified as Precious Mhenuter died on Saturday, January 28, four hours after arriving at the school's medical center and left unattended.

According to an eyewitness report, the 22-year-old student fell ill at her hostel at about 4 am and was rushed to the medical center for treatment. However, the health workers requested that a N200 consulting card must first be bought before she would be attended to. He added that they were unable to get the card because those in charge of selling the card were not available. She was allegedly left unattended for hours until she eventually gave up the ghost.

Her death sparked outrage on campus as the students protested the avoidable death of their colleague due to alleged negligence.

Reacting to the incident, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof Florence Obi, has directed the Medical Board of the institution to urgently conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the death of a student.
