17 Students Receive MSDF Scholarship

Seventeen brilliant but indigent students drawn from JSS 1 and SS1 classes in public schools in Delta State, had their hope of getting quality education renewed courtesy of Morgan Smart Development Foundation (MSDF).

Speaking in Warri at the award ceremony, the 4th by the Foundation, the President of MSDF, Dr. Evelyn Omawumi Urhobo recalled that when the foundation was established 10 years ago, one of its primary objectives was to give scholarship to intelligent but indigent children to help put them in a position to compete favourably with children from rich homes anywhere in the world.

According to her, the passion to give scholarship to children from poor homes was borne out of her personal experiences as her father died when she was about nine years old and with a 26-year-old mother who had to struggle to put her and a younger sister through school.

She said but for the privilege of the scholarship which saw her through secondary and tertiary schools, it would not have been possible for her to acquire the education that made her what she is today.
Dr Urhobo, therefore, enjoined the recipients to give their education the priority it deserves as education will give them the opportunity to become whatever they want to be in life.

She appealed for support from individuals and corporate organisations because “while more children continue to qualify for the award, the number of children given scholarship is limited because of limited funds.
We want to put 100 children in school and need donation of N20,000 a year for five years,” she said.

In the same vein, she said a person can sponsor as many students that he or she can afford and will be given the opportunity to mentor and become a role model for a particular child or children under the sponsorship programme, if he or she so wishes. (Vanguard)
